For several weeks, cable news networks have been bombarding viewers with coverage of America’s alleged slow march toward a fiscal cliff. The networks even, at times, have mentioned the $500 billion in cuts to planned Pentagon spending that is a part of the wonkish cocktail that would create a cliff dive.
But this Intercepts scribe would argue cable news segments alone failed to take the fiscal cliff debate into mainstream status. That changed Saturday night, when SNL offered late-night viewers its take on the ongoing drama in Washington.
Spoiler alert: The fictional President Obama describes the fictional Speaker Boehner as an “orange man” and declares he agreed to a fictional fiscal deal because “I felt sorry for this man.”
