November 12, 1942 was the first day of fighting in the three day, World War II, Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. U.S. Marines landed on the Solomon Islands in August of 1942 and combat was constant. But the three days between November 12 – 15 were the final climax and a turning point of the campaign.
Although the U.S. lost several ships in Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the naval force under Rear Admiral Willis Lee, USS Washington (BB-56), turned back Japanese transports trying to reinforce Guadalcanal. The Japanese never again tried to send large naval forces to Guadalcanal.
